From humble beginnings in 2010, funds raised through the Pink Lady® Crafts for Cancer event have helped countless women access cancer treatment with greater ease and dignity.

In 2022, the annual Pink Lady® Crafts for Cancer event was held at Simondium’s Country Lodge in the Western Cape region of South Africa. This year, the event attracted more than 80 guests and raised R 33 000 in ticket sales for Tygerberg Hospital’s Breast Clinic Transport Fund – all proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the fund.

While government funding covers treatment costs, the cost of transport to and from the hospital for radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions are often a barrier for more than 70 per cent of those women receiving treatment at Tygerberg.

Marketing Manager for TopFruit, Liza Matthews explains the social need driving the transport fund: “Treatment sessions extend over 19 days and transport costs around R 50 – R 60 per person per day. This is prohibitive for many of the patients at the Tygerberg Hospital Breast Clinic.”

Funds raised at this year’s event could assist up to 95 women with the transport costs required to access regular treatment.

Living the Pink Lady® brand values

This year marked the 13th  year that the Pink Lady® Crafts for Cancer initiative was held and it is a visible and concrete extension of Pink Lady® South Africa’s commitment to contribute to community. Liza summed up the feeling in the room, saying: “Each one of us can make a difference, but together we make change! The wonderful women that attend the Pink Lady® crafts for cancer event are helping women in real need. I am so proud of our ongoing involvement with this Fund.”

Over the course of the morning, guests enjoyed a macrame class with Willene Cordier, from Bohovio, live music from Afrikaans singer / song-writer Jak de Priester and a delicious luncheon.

Speaking on behalf of Tygerberg Hospital, oncologist Dr Tselane Thebe expressed heartfelt thanks for the generosity of attendees and sponsors, highlighting the significant contribution this event makes towards the R 210 000 needed to fund patient transport each year.
